Lititz, Pennsylvania Sewer Authority Receives Operations and Maintenance Excellence Award

FORT WASHINGTON, Pa. - February 6, 2006 - The Lititz, Pa. Sewer Authority has been awarded the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region III Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Excellence Award for the Medium Size Advanced Wastewater Treatment category. This is the second time Lititz has won this award, which is presented annually by the EPA in recognition of outstanding O&M practices and compliance status. The Borough's 3.85 MGD two-stage activated sludge facility is operated and maintained by Severn Trent Services.

The awards program highlights effective local O&M and recognizes the commitment by local officials and plant personnel to maintaining and protecting the nation's environmental infrastructure. It also increases public awareness of wastewater treatment facilities' contribution to clean water.

The Lititz plant was selected in 2004 to receive the Plant Operation and Maintenance Excellence Award from the Eastern Pennsylvania Water Pollution Control Operators Association. This award recognizes publicly owned treatment works treating more than 2 MGD per day that have demonstrated outstanding performance in permit compliance, process control, maintenance management, financial management, innovative practices, laboratory management, personnel training programs, pretreatment and industrial waste management, solids handling and disposal, safety and public relations. In 1990, the facility received the EPA Region III Operations and Maintenance Excellence Award and was a national award finalist. Region III comprises Pennsylvania, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.

Commenting on the award, Jeffrey Doutrich, Severn Trent Services regional manager, stated: "The Lititz wastewater facility uses state-of-the-art technology that serves the community with an excellent record of regulatory compliance. We are fortunate to be in partnership with the Borough and are honored to accept the Operations and Maintenance Excellence Award on behalf of the Borough of Lititz and the Lititz Sewer Authority. We look forward to continue working with the Borough and Authority as they prepare to comply with the nutrient reduction requirements of the Chesapeake Bay." Carl Kline, area manager, noted, "Selection for this award exemplifies the commitment by Lititz Borough Council, Lititz Sewer Authority, Warwick Township and Severn Trent employees to protect both our environment and the community's assets."

Severn Trent has operated and maintained the Borough's wastewater and 4 MGD water treatment plant since 1988.
