Inaugural JHAZ Focuses on Building Resilience
The inaugural issue of the Journal of Hazard Mitigation and Risk Assessment (JHAZ) addresses a subject especially relevant to recent events: building to mitigate risk. The new journal from the National Institute of Building Sciences, under the sponsorship of its Multihazard Mitigation Council, focuses on decreasing the nation's losses from disaster events while also promoting community preparedness, sustainability and resilience.
The free journal was in publication at a time of extreme seismic activity around the world. The articles had just gone through editorial review as the earthquake hit New Zealand in February and the first edition was heading to press when Japan experienced the earthquake and devastating tsunami earlier this month.
"We at the Institute are committed to improving the nation's resiliency and providing guidance on how to mitigate losses from natural and manmade disasters," said Institute President Henry L. Green, Hon. AIA. "JHAZ addresses a topic of extreme importance to the safety of our nation and the world. The timeliness of its release, though unplanned to coincide with such catastrophic devastation, is something we hope will help communities to better prepare for potential future events."
The new journal joins two other seminal periodicals in the Institute's library: the Journal of Building Enclosure Design and the Journal of Building Information Modeling. A fourth journal, the Journal of Advanced and High Performance Materials, will be released later this month. All of the Institute's journals are published by Matrix Group Publishing, Inc.
