Johnson Controls Donates Luxaire® Home comfort System to Detroit Family Featured on THIS OLD HOUSE®
Local Detroit contractor and distributor work together to support show’s renovation project
MILWAUKEE – (Jan. 24, 2017) – The Luxaire® heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) brand of Johnson Controls donated a home comfort system to a Detroit family who will be featured on all-new episodes of THIS OLD HOUSE, the Emmy Award-winning PBS home improvement television series. The This Old House Detroit project will premiere this spring.
Located in Detroit’s historic Russell Woods neighborhood, the two-story 1939 brick home is owned by retired Detroit firefighter Frank Polk and his family. The home is undergoing renovations, joining many other homes that have been recently revitalized in the Detroit area. Luxaire distributor Calverley Supply Company, Inc. and local HVAC contractor Burke Mechanical worked together to select and install a home comfort system best suited to meet the needs of the project.

The show’s plumbing and heating expert, Richard Trethewey, worked closely with Burke Mechanical on the installation of the system, which includes a Luxaire Acclimate™ modulating gas furnace, two-stage Luxaire Acclimate air conditioner, Luxaire coil and humidifier and air cleaner.
“Energy costs and environmental issues concern many homeowners, whether in new construction or in renovation projects like this one,” said, Joseph Burke, vice president, Burke Mechanical. “The Acclimate heating and cooling system addresses their concerns with high-efficiency, environmentally friendly performance.”
When it comes to cooling, air conditioners and heat pumps are rated according to the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER). Generally speaking, a higher SEER means the cooling unit offers increased efficiency and reduced operating expenses. The Acclimate modulating gas furnace can reduce energy costs nearly 40 percent, when compared to furnaces that are 20 years old or more. And with a SEER of up to 18, the Acclimate air conditioner, which received the 2016 Consumers Digest Best Buy award and is also recognized as ENERGY STAR® Most Efficient 2016, provides more cooling with less money.
In addition, their compact design makes the Acclimate units an excellent option for renovation projects, where space is often limited. The Polk family can also look forward to improved indoor air quality thanks to the Luxaire Acclimate humidifier and air cleaner. Renovations to the Polk home took place from June – December, 2016. The ten all-new THIS OLD HOUSE episodes that feature the home are scheduled to premiere on March 29, 2017 on PBS.
