Japan's NTTPC Communications Deploys Advanced Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing Optical Platform from Lucent Technologies

Lucent's Metropolis® Wavelength Services Manager (WSM) offers enhanced add/drop capabilities, helping NTTPC reduce operating costs and accelerate service introduction

MURRAY HILL, N.J. and TOKYO, Sept. 6 //-- Lucent Technologies (NYSE:LU) today announced that Japan's NTTPC Communications, Inc. has deployed Lucent's Metropolis® Wavelength Services Manager (WSM)--an advanced dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) optical platform--throughout it's network in Tokyo. Lucent's Metropolis® WSM is enabling NTTPC to quickly and cost-effectively increase the capacity of its network to support a wide range of Internet protocol (IP) based services.

The Metropolis® WSM's modular and compact design, and low power- consumption offers operators the ability to expand their network -- quickly and at relatively low cost -- as needed to increase the capacity of their metro optical networks. Additionally, these network upgrades can be made without interrupting wavelengths already in service, helping to ensure high network availability in support of mission-critical traffic and applications.

"Increasingly, service providers are focusing on the introduction of next- generation multimedia services over their broadband networks, which is creating a demand for greater and greater capacity on our optical networks," said Mr. Motoo Tanaka, Director of Network Division, Network Business Sector of NTTPC. "We selected Lucent's Metropolis® WSM to give us the flexibility to rapidly address this customer demand by providing additional capacity very quickly, speeding return on investment."

"Metropolis® WSM is an ideal platform for operators that want to grow their networks dynamically, while delivering a wide variety of advanced features," said Ken Wirth, president and general manager, Multimedia Networking Solutions, Lucent Technologies. "We are honored to be able to support NTTPC -- which has the most extensive IP network in Japan --- as they help their customers meet the challenge of delivering revenue-generating services quickly."

The Metropolis® Wavelength Services Manager (WSM) helps customers meet their capacity needs in the metropolitan and regional application spaces. The modular and flexible architecture of the product helps to reduce cost and complexity through a common optical platform that offers DWDM, coarse wavelength division multiplexing, and reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) technology. Because it supports a variety of data transport methods, the platform helps operators reduce capital and operational costs and helps simplify their networks, making them easier to manage and troubleshoot.

Metropolis® WSM provides a variety of monitoring and control interfaces, making it easier to address network operations challenges. Combined with the Lucent Optical Management System (OMS), Metropolis® WSM supports comprehensive end-to-end unified management of the transport network.
