ISO to Hold Workshop on Upcoming IWA on Glass Clarity

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has announced an upcoming workshop to further the development of an International Workshop Agreement (IWA) on the classification of glass clarity. The workshop will be held in Paris on October 15-16, 2009.

The clarity of glass is a critical characteristic in products such as jewelry, glassware, and tableware. The IWA will serve as a global reference document that allows interested stakeholders to have mutual understanding on the quality of clear glass as it relates to the perception by the consumer, communication of quality to the market, and sustainability of development methods.

The IWA will provide a generic definition and classification of glass clarity, along with a corresponding method to accurately and consistently measure clarity level.

Attendees of the upcoming Paris workshop will discuss the draft IWA, elaborating on it and addressing a time schedule for the development and completion of the document. Participants will also discuss key technical issues related to glass clarity, such as specifications, lightness and chroma, and iron content.

The secretariat for this initiative is France's national standards body, the Association Francaise de Normalisation (AFNOR). The workshop will be held at the Institut du Verre in Paris.

As the U.S. member body to ISO, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) invites all interested stakeholders to review the IWA and attend the workshop.

Registration by October 1, 2009, is required for this event, which is open to all interested stakeholders. Click here for the registration form. An agenda for the event is available here.

To receive a copy of the draft IWA, or for further information, contact Steven P. Cornish, ANSI senior director for international policy (scornish@ansi.org).
