International Standards Groups Convene at Illinois Meetings

BURR RIDGE, ILLINOIS — Representatives of industry, academia, and government from four continents will meet in Burr Ridge, Illinois, in June to conduct work on international standards for agricultural and forestry equipment.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) will convene a meeting of its technical committee on tractors and machinery for agriculture and forestry, TC23, and several TC23 subcommittees, for five days of technical discussions related to tractors, safety, sustainability, and equipment compatibility. The meeting is being hosted at the CNH America LLC facility and will take place June 10 – 14, 2013.

The purpose of the meeting is to make progress on the standardization of tractors, machines, systems, implements and equipment used in agriculture and forestry as well as in gardening, landscaping, irrigation, and other related areas. The subject matter will include electronic/electrical aspects and electronic identification all categories of animals.

Although much of the ISO committee work can be accomplished offsite, through the electronic sharing of documents and data, the efficient advancement of standards development necessitates that the committees convene periodically for face-to-face discussion. Formal host of the meeting is Thomas Tuttle, CNH, who is currently serving as chair of the TC23 subcommittee on tractors, SC4.

Numerous additional activities showcasing the Chicago-land area are being planned for meeting participants.

The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers is the accredited administrator for the US technical advisory group to the ISO committee on Tractors and Machinery for Agriculture and Forestry (TC23), and seven of its subcommittees. Committee membership is open and typically comprises individuals with an academic or commercial interest in the subject matter.

Participation in standards development benefits commerce as well as the public by ensuring issues such as consumer safety and evolving technology are addressed in a thorough and timely manner and by reducing trade barriers that can occur in the absence of standardization.
