IDI Composites Appoints Larry Landis to Head Development Team for New High-Performance Products

NOBLESVILLE, IN (USA) - IDI Composites International, the premier global formulator and manufacturer of SMC and BMC thermoset molding compounds, announces Larry Landis will head the development team for a new line of Engineered Structural Composites (ESC) targeted to high-reliability applications in military, transportation, and industrial.

Mr. Landis joined IDI Composites in 2005 and is currently the Director of Technology and Quality. Larry received his B.S. Degree in Chemistry from Kent State University in 1989, and attended Graduate School at KSU under the guidance of Dr. Roger Gilpin. In 1991 he joined Premix Inc. as a research chemist and became Senior Process Analytical Chemist and Manager of the Pilot Plant.

During the past six years, Mr. Landis has worked with the IDI Formulation Staff to develop unique fiberglass and carbon fiber based thermoset sheet molding compound (SMC) and bulk molding compound (BMC). This new product line has been a careful building of unique chemistry utilizing the latest technological advances in raw materials.

IDI's new line of high-performance thermoset composites is called Engineered Structural Composites (ESC) because of their exceptional properties. The new product line builds on the most popular properties of IDI's standard products, such as corrosion resistance and durability, with exceptionally light weight and superior tensile strength. In addition, ESC products experience little or no degradation in extreme hot and cold temperatures, making them ideal for the most demanding industrial and outdoor environments.

ESC products consist of a single resin product and also a hybrid chemistry (polyester, vinyl ester, polyurethane, and epoxy) that combines the best properties of the subject chemistries to create unique, enhanced properties. These properties give ESC products their exceptional strength relative to their weight. Reinforcement fibers for structural composites consist of traditional fiberglass materials, plus carbon fiber reinforcement for applications that require exceptional strength coupled with severe weight restrictions. As a result, ESC products are substantially superior to standard thermoset product chemistries.

"Larry has been instrumental in developing our new high-performance product line," said company Vice President and General Manager Tom Flood, "and is the natural choice to lead our ESC engineering team into the future."
