Honeywell Turbo Wins Environmental Innovation Award at Green Car Conference

Industry award further recognizes "green contributions" of turbocharging technology

DETROIT - Honeywell (NYSE: HON) Transportation Systems has been named a winner of the 2011 Automotive News PACE Environmental Award for its VNT DualBoost Turbo.

Honeywell received the award at the recently concluded Automotive News Green Car Conference in Novi, Mich., as one of four recipients of this honor recognizing "contributions to the automotive industry which also have a positive effect on the health of the environment." Honeywell and its VNT DualBoost Turbo were eligible for the award having been previously honored in April by Automotive News for excellence in automotive innovation and execution.

The VNT DualBoost Turbo brought to market five distinct innovations to provide Ford Motor Company's Power Stroke engine with improved engine performance, fuel economy, and responsiveness - all while helping Ford to meet new standards mandating an 80 percent reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions.

"By providing innovative and environmentally responsible solutions like the DualBoost turbocharger, Honeywell helps our customers deliver high performing vehicles that reduce harmful emissions and drive better fuel economy," said Alex Ismail, president and CEO of Honeywell Transportation Systems. "In the end, it's further proof that our industry leading turbo technology is providing real value to both automakers and drivers alike."

At the heart of Honeywell's DualBoost turbocharger is a dual-sided compressor wheel that provides the performance approaching that of a two stage turbo system in a single turbo package. The reduced packaging requirements allowed Honeywell to position the turbo between the banks of the V engine for optimal performance.

In addition, the VNT DualBoost includes additional innovations including low friction ball bearings and pedestal mounting to make the design more rigid and reduce noise, vibration and harshness to best-in-class levels.

Last year, Honeywell was awarded more than $3 billion of new business over the life of its turbo programs and expects to introduce more than 100 new turbo applications this year alone, and has more than 500 engine applications in its development pipeline. Turbocharger technology allows carmakers to provide 20 percent to 40 percent more fuel economy, improved emissions to meet more stringent regulatory requirements and all without compromising performance.
