Henkel Corporation, Curtis Packaging and Flint Group to Present Ink and Coating Options at Sustainable Packaging Coalition Spring Meeting

FEBRUARY 25, 2009

Bridgewater, NJ - Experts from Henkel Corporation, Curtis Packaging and Flint Group will present more sustainable ink and coating options at the Sustainable Packaging Coalition spring meeting in Chicago on March 24.

"Adhesives, inks and coatings are less understood packaging materials than primary substrates, such as aluminum, fiber, glass and plastics," said Isabelle Valois, Market Development Manager for Henkel's Adhesive Technologies division. "Individually, they often account for less than one percent of the total package. As a result, making more sustainable decisions about these 'auxiliaries' is difficult for packaging engineers and designers. Our presentation will help packaging professionals make decisions that can help promote their corporate sustainability efforts."

During the session, Henkel and Curtis Packaging representatives will simplify some of the science and technology of coatings, including the eco-pros and cons that led to the development of Henkel's MiraFoil® coating, an environmental alternative to metallic foil laminates. Curtis Packaging will share their experience using the MiraFoil® coating (as CurtCHROME(TM)), documenting the cost savings, environmental benefits and customer satisfaction that resulted. Representatives of Flint Group will discuss the impact of ink on sustainability.

"In choosing and using inks and coatings, there are a number of alternatives that can move packaging to a higher level of sustainability," said Valois. "The optimum choice depends on multiple factors and the specific sustainability goals of a company."
