Hardware Withdrawal: IBM TotalStorage DS4000 series 250 GB/7200 SATA disk drive module - Replacements available


Effective December 16, 2005, IBM will withdraw from marketing the following features. On or after the effective date of withdrawal, you can no longer order these products directly from IBM. You can obtain the products on an as-available basis through IBM Business Partners.

The DS4000 series SATA 250 GB/7200 rpm disk drive module feature (#4602), is being replaced by the DS4000 SATA 400 GB/7200 rpm disk drive module feature (#4603). Refer to Hardware Announcement 105-452 , dated November 8, 2005.

In order to take full advantage of the new SATA 400 GB/7200 disk drive and ensure investment protection, DS4000 series products require minimum firmware levels as described in the Replacement product information section of this announcement.

DS4000 SATA disk drive options firmware requirements

The following IBM TotalStorage® DS4000 series SATA disk drive options require a specific minimum controller firmware level or specific minimum EXP100 expansion enclosure ESM firmware level:

SATA 400 GB/7200 rpm disk drive module, feature #4603, part number 39M4570
SATA 400 GB/7200 HDD-4 Pack, part number 23R0285
SATA 400 GB/7200 rpm disk drive module, replacement CRU/FRU part number 39M4575
SATA 250 GB/7200 rpm disk drive module, replacement CRU/FRU part number 40K6837 planned for second quarter 2006 availability
DS4000 series products should be maintained at the latest firmware levels to take full advantage of the functional value and ensure investment protection.

Always check the README file contained in the firmware package received with DS4000 series products for any non-support incompatibility statements, prerequisite tasks, precautions, minimum/maximum statements, required firmware download sequences, or limitations before performing the firmware download task.

To support the required firmware level listed for the DS4300 single controller models (1722-6LU, 1722-6LX, 1722-6LJ), these models must first be upgraded to dual controller or dual controller with Turbo, by use of feature #2011/part number 24P8963 or feature #2012/part number 24P8964 as a prerequisite.
