IPC Midwest Announces First Annual Hand Soldering Competition

Who Will Be Crowned the Best-of-the-Best in the Midwest?

BANNOCKBURN, Ill., USA - IPC - Association Connecting Electronics Industries® announces the first annual IPC Midwest Hand Soldering Competition, September 21-22, 2011, at the Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel and Convention Center, Schaumburg, Ill. Held in conjunction with IPC Midwest Conference & Exhibition, the contest will pit competitors against each other to build a functional electronics assembly within a 30-minute time limit to ultimately determine who the best-of-the-best is in the Midwest.

"Think of the hand soldering competition as what you get when you combine the creativity from Top Chef, the sleek skill of American Chopper, the genius of How Do They Do It and then go directly the opposite of Build It Bigger," says Kris Roberson, IPC manager of assembly technology at IPC.

"Many companies in the Midwest take pride in how many IPC Certified Specialists they have on staff and this event is a fun and friendly way to give them an opportunity to let their staff shine," adds Roberson.

IPC Master Instructors will judge assemblies on soldering in accordance with IPC-J-STD-001, the speed at which assembly was produced and overall electrical functionality of assembly.

In addition to pocketing a cash prize of $500, the winner will own bragging rights as the Best Hand-Soldering Technician in the Midwest for 2011. Prizes of $250 and $100 will be awarded to two runners up.

After being a co-located event in Rosemont in 2010, IPC Midwest will be produced solely by IPC in 2011 and will bring focused, targeted and relevant information for the electronics manufacturing and printed boards industries.

Competition entries will be accepted until August 30, 2011. For more information on the competition or IPC Midwest Conference & Exhibition, visit www.IPCMidwestShow.org. OK International/Metcal is the Grand Sponsor of the First Annual IPC Midwest Hand Soldering Competition.
