Choice Of Gov. Palin Is A Strategically Smart Surprise Says NAM Executive Vice President Timmons

Press release date: August 28, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C., Aug. 28, 2008 -- Presumptive Republican Presidential nominee Sen. John McCain's (R-AZ) selection of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to be his running mate "is a game changer in the presidential race," said Jay Timmons, National Association of Manufacturers executive vice president. "In 2004, I sat down with her in a local restaurant near Wasilla, Alaska, to discuss her interest in running for the U.S. Senate against fellow Republican and incumbent Lisa Murkowski," said Timmons, former executive director of the National Republican Senatorial Committee. "Armed with polling information and precinct data, I was prepared to discuss her thoughts on whether she could win the race. She was only interested in talking about how she thought she could make an impact on national public policy - a focus on fiscal discipline, lower taxes on working Americans and strong support for the military and exporting freedom. "I was thoroughly impressed. And Americans are likely to be impressed with her story and record as well. "Governor Palin is a trailblazer for women. She is a strong executive (the only candidate for President or Vice President this year who has such experience) and does not shy away from difficult decisions. And who could not be impressed that she returned to the job of Governor last year just three days after giving birth to her fifth child? "The job of a Governor is perfect preparation to helping run the federal government," Timmons said. "A consistent economic conservative, Gov. Palin understands first-hand the complexities and challenges of stimulating economic growth and job creation. She broke new ground as the youngest person and first woman to be elected Governor of Alaska and has a higher approval rating (roughly 90 percent) than any other current American governor. "On important domestic issues, Gov. Palin has a strong record of support for increasing domestic energy supplies. Should the McCain-Palin team be elected, we will work with the new administration to keep U.S. manufacturing strong and growing so we can create more and better jobs in America," Timmons concluded.
