Goodyear's Carbon Fiber Tire Wins Award

AKRON, Ohio, Nov. 3, 2006 - Goodyear's newest tire, the Eagle® featuring ResponsEdge Technology(TM), was selected this week by the editors of Popular Mechanics for the magazine's Editors Choice Award during Automotive Aftermarket Industry Week in Las Vegas.

The award was given "in recognition of outstanding achievement in new product design and innovation," according to the magazine. Only 17 automotive products were honored by Popular Mechanics with the Editors Choice Award, and the Goodyear Eagle ResponsEdge was the only tire selected.

"A team effort between Goodyear engineers and marketers helps deliver technology that is relevant to the consumer's needs. Independent recognition such as this, along with strong consumer demand for our tires, confirms our success with products such as the Eagle ResponsEdge," said Bob Toth, marketing manager for Goodyear auto tires.

In the new Eagle featuring ResponsEdge Technology, the outboard sidewall of the tire is reinforced with a high-tech carbon fiber insert that provides stiffness for responsive handling and steering precision. Combined with conventional tire construction on the inboard sidewall, the tire delivers a smooth, comfortable ride.

With threadlike strands of carbon that are strong and flexible, carbon fiber is a substance that weighs much less than steel of similar strength. As a woven composite fabric, it is increasingly used in high-tech race cars and jet planes.

Over the top of the belt package, the tire also sports a sound- and shock-absorbing InsuLayer(TM) made with DuPont(TM) KEVLAR®, to help provide a smooth, quiet ride, along with promoting even treadwear.

Toth accepted the Popular Mechanics' award from William Congdon, publisher, and Don Chaikin, automotive editor. Popular Mechanics is a leading technology magazine with monthly readership of more than six million.

In the past five years, Goodyear has flexed its innovative muscle by capturing numerous awards for its new products, including Popular Mechanics Editors Choice Awards for its Fortera HL, Eagle F1 GS-D3 and Assurance TripleTred tires. All of the tires went on to receive additional rave reviews in the industry, and have been sales successes for the company, too.
