CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – GE’s Intelligent Platforms business (NYSE: GE) today announced that its exida certified Mark VIeS Safety Management System received the exida 2014 Safety Award in the Logic Solver category. The announcement is being made in conjunction with the company’s User Summit: Making the Industrial Internet Real, being held this week in Orlando, Florida.

“To help meet the ever-evolving safety challenges of today’s connected world, GE has leveraged its rich history of critical process control to deliver the Mark VIeS Safety Management System,” said Steve Close, exida senior safety engineer. “We feel as though the Mark VIeS Safety Management System best demonstrates exceptional work and has the ability to play a key role in the continuous journey of making the world a safer place.“

exida, the global leader in functional safety and cybersecurity certification for the process industries, presented awards in three categories: Sensor, Logic Solver, and Interface Module. Founded in 1999 and with offices around the world, exida is a key player in testing and assessing automation safety products. The agency is a leading certification body and serves on the international committees that write safety standards. exida is in a unique position to review safety products from many different manufacturers. The safety award gives the agency an opportunity to recognize products that stand out in meeting functional safety standards.

“exida has certified many logic solvers,” said Dr. William Goble, CFSE, Principal Partner at exida. “The GE Mark VIeS Safety Management system has very flexible redundancy architectures. This feature, as well as several others, made this product stand out amongst the 2014 Safety Award nominees. Congratulations to General Electric on this achievement.”

The Mark VIeS system is a complete, flexible, and reliable engineered process safety system with enhanced cyber security for critical processes such as plant emergency shutdown, burner management, critical process control, fire and gas detection, and turbo machinery safety. Part of the Mark VIe family of integrated control and power conversion solutions, Mark VIeS boasts SIL3 fault-tolerance, Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) and an end-to-end architecture that optimizes assets and operations as well as reduces costs.

The Mark VIeS was developed to provide turbo machinery safety in a box, building on GE’s industrial heritage, the shared IO network between the Mark VIe DCS and Mark VIeS Safety Instrumented System, and effortless black channel communications - helping the customers meet emerging safety requirements. These diverse product functions and features help Oil Gas, Power Generation and other process industry customers meet existing and emerging functional safety requirements.

“GE thanks exida for this award,” said Ashok Acharya, Senior Controls Product Manager for GE.

“In today’s world of brilliant machines, operators require high-performance automation solutions that seamlessly connect their machines, data, and people while ensuring the safety and integrity of their control systems and operational infrastructure,” he said. “The Mark VIeS Safety Management System was born from GE’s decades-long heritage of power generation and infrastructure protection and control applications to deliver that convergence of connectivity and safety.”
