How to Plan Effective Meetings

Advice for gases and welding professionals on planning proper meetings

Dewitt, NY - As part of its continued effort to inform and educate young management professionals in the gases and welding industry, the February issue of GAWDA Edge features an article from noted motivational speaker and business expert Larry Johnson. Johnson's article is entitled "Eight Steps For Productive Meetings" and it focuses on how young managers can plan effective and efficient meetings.

In his article Johnson states that meetings, when run properly, can be a key contributor to a company's success. They serve to bring employees together and get everyone on the same page. However, when poorly run, meetings can also be colossal wastes of time that kill productivity while accomplishing very little. He includes eight simple tips to help young managers maximize the effectiveness of their meetings.

The steps include:

o Determine the purpose. People are quick to label something as stupid if it wastes their time.

o Consider alternatives to meetings. Can the purpose be accomplished equally well through a less time-consuming method.

o Create an agenda. Be sure to identify who, what and when

o Start on time. The problem with starting meetings late is that they then tend to run late.

o End on time. Your colleagues are busy, stick to the schedule.

o Stick to the agenda. This will help keep the meeting from getting off track.

o Assign responsibilities. People like to know what they are responsible for.

o Take notes and publish minutes. Make sure that assigned responsibilities are clearly defined.
