Gases and Welding Distributors Talk Vacation Time

What to do when an employee requests more time off.

Dewitt, NY - As a part of its continued effort to keep the gases and welding industry informed of all the controversial issues that surround the business, Welding & Gases Today Online's "On The Edge" section features an article called "Give Me a Break." The article tackles a very touchy Human Resources issue: When employees request extra vacation time, what should a business owner do?

According to the article, around the holidays, many employees are looking to take time off to spend with friends and family. But when an employee exhausts his or her allowed personal time early in the year and comes to you asking for additional vacation time, how do you respond? Keeping your employees happy is important, but gases and welding distributorships are businesses and there is a fine line when it comes to making special allowances.

The article then gives an example of GAWDA distributor Charlie Mundt of Churche Towne Gas, whose company is located in Cochranton, PA. Mundt ran into this very issue with an employee recently. "One of our drivers came to me and asked for an extra week of vacation time. He was a very good employee and had been with us for five years, but he wasn't due for additional time until ten years," he explains. Faced with a tough decision, Mundt decided it was best to adhere to company policy.

So how did it turn out? You'll have to read the article to find out: www.weldingandgasestoday.org/index.php/2010/12/give-me-a-break-2/. Also, we consult with TWSCO HR guru Wes Morris for insight on the topic.
