On Time, On Budget, Innovative Road Projects Win Big!

(Boston, MA) - Highway users in Maryland, New York, Delaware, and Pennsylvania are benefiting from less congestion, improved safety, and greater productivity as a result of five projects that were named today as winners in the America's Transportation Awards Northeast regional competition.

The winning projects were announced today at the Northeast Association of State Transportation Officials annual meeting in Boston, Massachusetts.

Fourteen transportation projects from 8 northeastern states and the District of Columbia were judged in three categories: On Time, On Budget, and Innovative Management. The five winning projects are now in the running for the America's Transportation Awards Grand Prize, which will be presented this fall.

"Not every project can take home a prize," said John Horsley, executive director of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. "But I'm certain that the people benefiting directly from these highway improvements can come up with a million reasons why each of them is a winner."

AASHTO, AAA, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce have teamed up for the second year to host the competition to honor America's very best in transportation.

The Maryland Department of Transportation received two awards: one for the MD 32 at Burntwoods Road Project, which took home a prize in the On Time, Small Project category; and another for the I-70 Over Black Rock Road Project which won in the Innovative Management, Small Project category.

The New York State Department of Transportation's I-86 Interchange Project won in the On Budget, Medium Project category. The I-95 Mainline Widening Project by the Delaware
Department of Transportation won in the On Time, Medium Project category. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's Boulevard of the Allies Bridge Project won in the Innovative Management, Medium Project category.

Winners in the three remaining regional competitions will also compete for the Grand Prize, which will be presented at the AASHTO Annual Meeting in October. A separate People's Choice Award will also be awarded to the project receiving the highest
number of votes from the general public.
