First French Version of Linspire Released

Combined Community & Commercial Effort Launches First of Many Languages to Come

SAN DIEGO, Nov. 28 -- Linspire, Inc., developer of the commercial desktop Linux operating system of the same name and primary sponsor of the IRMA Project (International Resource Management Application), a community-based desktop Linux localization initiative, today announced the immediate release and availability of Linspire French 5. The combined translation efforts from the IRMA community (linspire.com/irma), Linspire translation specialists and strategic partners have led to the first French release of Linspire -- one of many languages to be released in the coming weeks.

"Our language localization strategy is defined by listening to our customers and embracing them as they embrace desktop Linux," said Kevin Carmony, President and CEO of Linspire. "Now French speaking customers from around the world can experience a secure, reliable, easy-to-use, and thoroughly translated desktop Linux in their native language."

Open source community volunteers, strategic partners and Linspire's engineers have been working on a multi-pronged effort to translate both the operating system and key applications. Using the Web-based translating application project called IRMA, volunteers who speak both French and English translated thousands of strings of code that make up the complete Linspire operating system. Those translated strings were then checked, edited and filtered to create the French version of Linspire 5.

"User demand around the world continues to push the adoption curve forward for desktop Linux," continued Carmony. "Linspire is committed to continue to work hand in hand with the international Linux and open source communities in order to provide more localized versions of Linspire in the future."
