Fiesta Village Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant Wins Florida Water Environment Association Award Using Severn Trent Services' TETRA Denite Filtration Technology

Treatment facility is the 15th Phelps award winner in 17 years to use the TETRA filtration technology

FORT WASHINGTON, Pa. - April 27, 2009 - The Fiesta Village Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant in Lee County, Fla., received the Florida Water Environment Association's 2009 Earle B. Phelps Award in the advanced wastewater treatment plant category. Fifteen of the last 17 winners of the Phelps Award have utilized the TETRA® technology for their filtration needs.

The 5 MGD Fiesta Village Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant uses the TETRA Denite® system from Severn Trent Services for simultaneous nitrate-nitrogen and total suspended solids (TSS) removal. The effluent produced is either used for reclaimed water or put back into nature to become part of the water cycle. The use of reclaimed water helps to reduce the demand on potable water supplies to meet irrigation needs.

The TETRA Denite system is a fixed-film biological denitrification process that also serves as a deep bed filtration system capable of removing suspended solids to virtually any final effluent requirement. The system integrates well with other plant treatment processes to provide superior total nitrogen and phosphorous removal. Denite is used as the final treatment step in the total nitrogen removal process to help facilities meet stringent discharge limits.

The runner-up in the advanced water treatment plant category was The Hillsborough County (Fla.) Water Department's Northwest Regional Water Reclamation Facility. The plant's deep bed filtration process, which removes TSS from the wastewater system, is provided by the TETRA DeepBed(TM) filtration system from Severn Trent Services. The Northwest Regional Water Reclamation Facility received the 2008 Earle B. Phelps Award in the advanced wastewater treatment plant category.

The Earle B. Phelps Award, established in 1964, honors outstanding wastewater treatment plants in Florida that have maintained the highest removal of pollutants. Awards are given in three categories: advanced treatment; advanced secondary facilities; and secondary treatment facilities. Plant size also is considered, with nominees being evaluated against facilities of the same relative size and treatment type.
