FEV to Display Family of Next-gen Dual Clutch Transmissions at 2015 SAE World Congress

xDCT reduces mass, complexity, cost while also offering hybridization potential

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – FEV North America, Inc. (FEV) a leading developer of vehicle systems and advanced powertrain technologies, will be showing its advanced Dual Clutch Transmission (xDCT) at the 2015 SAE World Congress, April 21 - 23 at Cobo Center in Detroit, Mich. The transmission, part of a larger family of compact, highly efficient transmissions, demonstrates FEV's view of the vehicle as a connected system in which all functions contribute to efficiency and enhanced performance.

The xDCT transmissions take a new approach to the dual clutch transmission, which has been traditionally viewed as limited due to mechanical complexity, package space, and cost. The xDCT, on the other hand, incorporates "gear generation" as its main feature, which allows for a higher number of gear ratios without increasing mechanical complexity. This enables small gear steps and short 1(st) gears which is beneficial in achieving good launch performance and shift quality.

Lower number of rotating parts translates to reduced parasitic drag, which leads to further improved mechanical efficiency. The combination of improved efficiency and wide ratio spread contributes to reduced vehicle fuel consumption. This transmission can also be hybridized for future applications.
