EPA Appoints 17 Mayors, Other Local Leaders to Federal Advisory Group
WASHINGTON - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lisa P. Jackson has appointed 30 new local, state, and tribal elected and appointed officials from across the country to serve on the agency's Local Government Advisory Committee (LGAC). The committee advises EPA on a broad range of environmental issues affecting communities.
State, local and tribal governments are on the frontline in delivering environmental services and, since 1993, LGAC has provided EPA independent advice on effective national policies from the perspective of thousands of local governments and authorities throughout the nation.
EPA will seek advice from the local leaders on finding innovative solutions to the challenges of climate change, improving our air quality, protecting our waters, and cleaning up our communities. The LGAC will also focus on how to better engage and serve disadvantaged communities historically underrepresented in environmental decision-making.
