Environmental Services Company Expands Capabilities with New Authorization to Transport Ebola Suspected or Confirmed Medical Waste

SWS Environmental Services recently acquired a new operating permit from the United States Department of Transportation.

Panama City Beach, FL — SWS Environmental Services (SWSES) has been granted "Party Status" by the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT), Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) – Office of Hazardous Materials Safety for USDOT Special Permit # 16279 to transport certain Ebola contaminated medical waste for disposal in every state in the U.S.

SWSES is one of only eighteen companies in the entire nation to possess this specialized medical waste transportation capability. As indicated in the permit language, "this special permit authorizes the transportation in commerce of materials that have been contaminated with or are suspected to have been contaminated with the Ebola virus."

The SWSES carrier safety record history was examined in great detail with the approval process taking approximately six weeks.  During the process, investigative questions were posed by federal regulators from both PHMSA and the Office of Hazardous Materials Safety.

In recent cases throughout the nation, there have been a number of issues regarding proper handling and waste disposal practices for Ebola contamination. To be among a very small amount of permitted companies able to provide this type of medical waste transportation service elevates availability to current and new customers.

"The acquisition of this new permit allows us to more effectively and efficiently manage transportation movements of medical and bio-hazardous waste," explained Greg Williams, Director of Environmental Compliance for SWSES. "We have uniquely positioned ourselves to service the communities, in which we live, should an emergency response situation warrant our continually demonstrated Professional Services."
