Engine Oil Top-Ups Have Been Reduced By 20% Since Switching To DURON(TM)-E 15W-40

With terminals located throughout British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan, Formula Powell specializes in drilling mud warehousing and the safe transport of equipment, small drilling rigs, service rigs, camps, matting and waste to and from oil fields.

They're one of the largest oil field
trucking companies in Western Canada
and are among the top innovators in
the industry,
continually
creating and
delivering new
solutions to
their customers.
For example,
recognizing
the need for
year-round site
access they were
instrumental in
the introduction
of oak road mats
to Canada in
1998.

The Formula Powell
Truck Fleet

The Fort Nelson terminal boasts a
convoy of 35 off-road trucks, 100
flatbed trailers, 60 van trailers and
a wide array of loaders and forklifts.
Each are relied upon to successfully
navigate through unforgiving off-road
and oil field conditions. Dust, bitter
cold temperatures, rugged terrain
- you name it.

It's up to the expert maintenance
team, led by Shop Foreman John
Allen, to ensure that these machines
are ready and able to answer the call
of duty. Service intervals and proper
lubrication are key factors.

Past Lubrication Issues

"The grease we were using wasn't
providing protection or lasting as long
as we needed
it to," says
Allen. "We were
changing
u-joints, tie rod
ends and brake
cam bushings
way too often."

"The engine oils
we used to use
did not have
the extended
drain interval
capabilities we
required. Top-up
consumption
was an issue
too, as were high ash levels."

In an effort to rectify the problems,
Allen contacted his lubricant
distributor, Dall Contracting. They
helped him find the solutions he
needed. The solutions came in the
form of Petro-Canada's PRECISION(TM)
Synthetic Moly grease, DURON XL
Synthetic Blend 0W-30 and DURON-E
15W-40 heavy duty engine oil.

What A Difference

"Engine oil top-ups have been reduced by 20%
since switching to DURON-E 15W-40," says Allen.
"And the tote packaging of the oil has helped to
reduce handling. This saves us a lot of time."

DURON-E multigrade oils are premium heavy duty
engine oils that exceed the current requirements
of API CJ-4. They are suitable for use in '07 EPA
compliant low emission engines and are also
back-serviceable for use in pre-'07 engines.
Companies, like Formula Powell, benefit from
DURON-E's ability to reduce oil consumption,
oxidative thickening and valve train wear, as well
as its advanced soot fighting capabilities.

DURON XL Synthetic Blend 0W-30 is now being
used in forklifts, loaders and bed truck engines.
"During the winter, sometimes these machines
sit for a day or two without being started. In the
past there were times when we couldn't get them
started without using an auxiliary heater. The
entire process would take two to three hours. But
now with DURON XL Synthetic Blend 0W-30 the
engines are responsive right away. Now we don't
need to bring in the heaters and, as a result, are
saving valuable time."

DURON XL Synthetic Blend 0W-30 is a premium
oil recommended for equipment operating in both
on-highway and off-highway heavy duty service
applications. Performance benefits include cold
weather start-ups at temperatures as low as
-45°C (-49°F), extended oil life and lower fuel
consumption through lower viscous drag.

Grease Performance

"We were looking for a moly grease that could
provide advanced protection. By switching to
PRECISION Synthetic Moly we got all that and
more," says Allen. "A number of components,
including u-joints, tie rod ends and brake cam
bushings are now lasting two to three times longer
than before."

PRECISION Synthetic Moly contains 3%
Molybdenum disulphide. The grease offers a
number of performance benefits, including hardy
shock-loading capacity, high mechanical stability
in severe operating conditions, and resistance to
leakage, dripping and throw-off.

The Total Package

Allen also likes the fact that Petro-Canada
formulates their lubricants so that they can be
used throughout several applications. Because of
this Formula Powell was able to consolidate their
inventory, save space and money.

"Since Petro-Canada provides such an integrated
line of products, we now only need to inventory a
handful of lubricants to meet all of our needs.
