Energy-saving Upgrades to Street Lights in East Rockaway, NY Scheduled to Begin Early April

Upgrades part of a self-funded energy performance contract with Johnson Controls guaranteed to save the Village more than $2 million

MILWAUKEE – The Village of East Rockaway, New York, is upgrading 745 street light fixtures, beginning in early April, as part of an energy performance contract with Johnson Controls.

Over the next several months, Johnson Controls will replace existing high-wattage high-pressure sodium (HPS) street lights throughout the town with low-wattage LED fixtures. The new LED street lights enhance illumination along city streets and provide savings through increased energy efficiency, less maintenance and longer rated life.

The lighting upgrades are the latest in a series of infrastructure improvements Johnson Controls is handling for the Village of East Rockaway under the provisions of the energy performance contract. Other improvements to the Village’s seven municipal buildings include sealing roof and wall joints; installing door weather stripping and pipe and valve insulation; retrofitting lamps, ballasts and occupancy sensors for interior lighting; and installing energy-saving programmable thermostats.

“By partnering with Johnson Controls, the Village of East Rockaway is guaranteed to save more than $2 million over the 18-year term of the energy performance contract, the result of improvements we are making to our building envelope and infrastructure,” said Mayor Bruno Romano. “I am excited to report that all the projects included in the contract are funded without cost to our tax-payers by the energy savings they achieve—savings that are helping the Village lay a firm foundation for the future and meet our sustainability goals.”

In addition to savings earned through the energy performance contract, the Village will receive a $32,000 rebate award for energy-efficient lighting and lighting controls from PSEG Long Island.

The infrastructure improvements are expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in an amount equivalent to 700 barrels of oil consumption per year. Johnson Controls conducted the initial energy audit for work covered by the energy performance contract and is currently managing the various energy-saving projects. The company also has energy performance contracts with the nearby villages of Hempstead, Lynbrook and Valley Stream, New York.

Johnson Controls helped establish energy performance contracting in 1983, and has implemented more than 3,000 energy performance contracts in North America alone.
