Employee-Generated Ideas Drive Distributor's Growth

GAWDA member Haun Welding Supply calls on employees to provide sales, operational edge.

Dewitt, NY – Headquartered in Syracuse, NY, with 17 additional locations throughout the New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont, Haun Welding Supply promises its customers The Haun Edge, a mission that suggests sharpness and precision and keeps employees on top of their game. The company aims to deliver on this mission to a variety of industries, including construction, fabrication, manufacturing, commercial, medical, laboratories, education and homeowners. Haun Welding Supply is featured in the Fall 2012 issue of Welding Gases Today, the leading magazine for the gases and welding equipment industry.

With 185 employees spread across 17 locations, Haun Welding Supply President Mark Haun is adamant about his reliance on the people of Haun. “I communicate the message throughout the organization that taking care of customers is our primary mission.” And then he expects employees to take ownership and be responsible. “I can’t take credit for our success,” he says. “There are 185 people here who are making it work.”

Haun Welding Supply’s employees have contributed some of the company’s most successful ideas in recent memory. At the urging of the company’s director of finance, store sales are measured on a budget of what the store is expected to do, rather than a comparison of previous years. Credit Manager Josh Haun is responsible for inspiring a series of free welding training classes that have generated several repeat customers.

On the operations side of the business, The Haun Edge is made possible by efficient fill plant operations. Haun Welding Supply is home to the longest cylinder filling island in the U.S. at 120 feet long and 20 feet wide. The fill plant supplies high-pressure industrial and medical gases, as well as high-purity specialty gases. The gases are distributed in either liquid form or as a high-pressure gas through more than 100,000 cylinders and dewars in the Haun system.
