Emerson Network Power White Papers Offer Strategies for Increasing Efficiencies in Data Center Cooling and Operational Performance

Columbus, Ohio May 3: Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR) and the global leader in enabling Business-Critical Continuity(TM), today announced the availability of two Liebert white papers addressing the issues of curbing rising data center energy and operational costs. Entitled "Five Strategies for Cutting Data Center Energy Costs through Enhanced Cooling Efficiency" and "Using Virtualization and Digital Control Technologies to Increase Data Center Operating Efficiency," the white papers are available for download at Liebert.com/support/whitepapers.

Cooling accounts for approximately 37 percent of electricity usage within a well-designed data center and, in many cases, represents significant opportunity to reduce IT energy costs. The "Five Strategies" white paper presents five important strategies for increasing data center cooling efficiency. The strategies outlined in the white paper can reduce cooling system energy costs by as much as 45 percent and generate recurring savings. Many of the suggestions are relatively simple, inexpensive changes that can pay immediate dividends.

"As power consumption and electricity prices rise, energy costs become one of the driving factors in decisions regarding data center location, design and operation," said Fred Stack, vice president of marketing, Liebert Solutions, Emerson Network Power. "Through our more than 40 years experience cooling data centers, we have developed strategies for improving efficiency that range from use of established technologies leveraging outside air to provide energy-free cooling to newer technologies that deliver greater efficiencies by bringing cooling closer to the source of heat."

The "Virtualization" white paper explores the concept of a dynamic data center, where operating expenses are balanced in real time with service level agreements and forecasts to maximize ROI and minimize risk. The data center would be capable of reacting to changing operational parameters via a combination of power and OS/Applications management at the server level, along with digital control of the local power and cooling infrastructure. The net result could be a reduction in overall operating expense of 20 to 30 percent.

A 2006 survey by the Data Center Users Group showed that data center energy efficiency is fast becoming a priority in the industry, with 42 percent of survey respondents saying they have either analyzed efficiency or are currently analyzing it. Respondents perceived a significant opportunity for energy efficiency to be in the areas of cooling equipment (49 percent), servers (46 percent), power equipment (39 percent) and storage (21 percent).
