Emerson Network Power Demonstrates MicroTCA and AdvancedTCA Based Media Processing and Platform Management at GLOBALCOMM


IMS video streaming, conferencing and platform management demos highlight Emerson's new ATCA blades, AdvancedMC modules, and MicroTCA systems

MADISON, WI; June 2, 2006 - Emerson Network Power's (NYSE: EMR) new Embedded Computing business, formerly Artesyn Communication Products, today announced that it will host a series of IMS and signaling demonstrations at GLOBALCOMM using its new AdvancedTCA blades, AdvancedMC modules, and MicroTCA systems. Emerson will demonstrate video streaming and videoconferencing applications on its new KAT4000 AdvancedTCA blade and MicroTCA development system. Emerson will also demonstrate new platform and protocol management software.

"At GLOBALCOMM, we will demonstrate how these versatile platforms can be used to host a broad range of telecom infrastructure applications, including IMS and application hosting."

Emerson will utilize AdvancedTCA and MicroTCA shelves to perform the demonstrations. The ATCA shelf will feature Emerson's KAT4000, a configurable ATCA blade with expansion sites for up to four AdvancedMC modules. KAT4000 blades equipped with DSP media processing modules from partner Surf Communications will be used to perform the IMS video streaming and videoconferencing-over-IP applications. A separate demonstration will show how Emerson's new middleware can be used to provide shelf management and protocol configuration.

Emerson will perform a pair of demos using its new 12-slot MicroTCA development system, which is equipped with a MicroTCA Carrier Hub (MCH) module, power supply, Fat Pipe switch module, application/protocol processing, and platform management software. In the first demo, KosaiPM AdvancedMC modules plugged directly into the MicroTCA chassis will perform application hosting. Surf modules will perform IMS video streaming and videoconferencing. In the second demo, a KosaiPM module running Linux from a hard drive will perform videoconferencing.

The KAT4000 is configurable ATCA blade for telecom infrastructure applications. Equipped with four AdvancedMC expansion sites, the KAT4000 features a versatile switched fabric with support for Gigabit Ethernet and PCI Express protocols, and a modular Fat Pipe design that can be upgraded to support Serial RapidIO and 10-Gigabit Ethernet in the future. The KAT4000 also features IPMI system management, an optional Freescale 8548 Management Processor, and a multi-channel PICMG 3.1-compliant, ATCA interface with an aggregate bandwidth of up to eight Gigabit/sec.

The KosaiPM is an AdvancedMC module equipped with a 1.8-GHz Pentium M processor, one Mbyte of Level 2 cache, two Gbytes of SDRAM, and 256 Mbytes of on-board USB flash storage. The KosaiPM's mezzanine interface utilizes two Gigabit Ethernet channels to facilitate communications with ATCA carriers and MicroTCA backplanes. The KosaiPM also features a USB interface, a serial interface, an I2C-based IPMI system management interface, and an optional storage interface, which provides access to hard drives residing in other AMC slots.

About MicroTCA ( TCA)

TCA is a proposed PICMG specification for small form factor, field-replaceable telecom chassis. Available in a variety of flexible form factors (rack mount, cube, etc), TCA chassis can accept any standard AdvancedMC module. TCA will provide scaleable aggregate bandwidth up to 612 Gbit/sec (per MCH), support star, dual-star, and full-mesh topologies, employ a serial packet transport with up to 12.5 Gbit/sec of bandwidth per channel, and provide a redundant Intelligent Peripheral Management Interface. TCA will also be protocol agnostic, enabling it to accommodate AdvancedMC modules running a range of protocols including Ethernet, PCI Express/Advanced Switching and Serial Rapid I/O.
