Dr. R. Craig McClung Receives ASTM International Award of Merit for Contributions to Fatigue and Fracture Standards

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., -R. Craig McClung, Ph.D., program director at Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas, has received the Award of Merit from ASTM International Committee E08 on Fatigue and Fracture. The Award of Merit, which includes the title of fellow, is ASTM's highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to standards activities.
McClung was honored for his contributions to Committee E08 and the development of standard test methods for fatigue and fracture. A member of ASTM International since 1990, McClung serves as member at large on the E08 executive subcommittee. He has chaired past E08 workshops and symposia and works on several E08 subcommittees. McClung received the E08 Award of Appreciation in 1995 and 2010, and the E08 Fatigue Lecturer Award in 2010.
A specialist in fatigue crack growth, McClung began his career at Southwest Research Institute in 1988 as a senior research engineer. He served in positions of increased responsibility, including group leader, manager and senior program manager, before assuming his current role in 2006. His major technical contributions at SwRI have included the development of DARWIN, the probabilistic, fracture mechanics-based, reliability assessment tool used by many gas turbine engine manufacturers and government entities. He also leads a large industrial consortium for development and support of the widely-used NASGRO fatigue crack growth analysis software.
The author or co-author of more than 100 publications, McClung currently serves as associate editor for North America for the international journal, Fatigue and Fracture of Engineering Materials and Structures. He is also a member of ASME International.
McClung earned his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering in 1988 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he also received an M.S. in theoretical and applied mechanics. He holds an M.A. in religion from Harding Graduate School of Religion, and a B.S. in engineering science from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
