Dr. Andy Pickard Receives Award for Work on ASTM International Petroleum Standards



Professional chemist Andy Pickard, Ph.D., a consultant based in Qualicum Beach, British Columbia, has received the Frank W. Reinhart Award from ASTM International.



An ASTM member since 1978, Pickard received the award for his outstanding service to ASTM Committee D02 on Petroleum Products, Liquid Fuels and Lubricants, notably his technical guidance to terminology standardization. He is a decorated D02 member, having received the Eagle Award as well as several Awards of Excellence. The committee recognized his longtime service with the George V. Dyroff Award of Honorary D02 Membership in 2009. Pickard works on several D02 groups, and currently chairs the Subcommittee on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (D02.H0). He also lends his expertise to the ASTM Technical and Professional Training Program on Diesel Fuels, serving as a class instructor since 2007.



Pickard has nearly 50 years of experience in the petroleum products and liquid fuels sector. He has worked with all fuels, including natural gas, propane, gasoline, aviation fuel, diesel fuel, heating oil and heavy fuel oils. He was a senior fuel specialist at Petro-Canada for more than 20 years before beginning his consultancy work in 2003.



A graduate of the University of British Columbia, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, Pickard received his Ph.D. in organo-metallic chemistry from the University of Western Ontario, and completed post-doctoral studies at the University of Chicago. Outside ASTM, he is a member of the Association of the Chemical Profession of British Columbia, the Canadian Society for Chemistry, the Chemical Institute of Canada and SAE International.
