Dow Corning to Present at 12th APPW Conference

MIDLAND, MICHIGAN, USA - Dow Corning Corporation chemist Sung-Hsuen Chao will present "Understanding the Foaming and Dynamic Behavior of Black Liquor Components" at the 12th African Pulp & Paper Week (APPW) this June in South Africa.

Chao's presentation - based on a technical paper she wrote, with Laurent Vermeire and Torolf Laxen - is an overview of their research project on foaming that occurs in the pulp washing line during black liquor processing.

"Unwanted foam causes costly production disturbances and chemical consumption in pulp mills," Chao said. "This study identifies the relationship between the key constituents and the foaming characteristics of black liquor. A clear relationship has been established between the foaming tendency and the dynamic surface tension."
The study results can significantly increase the understanding of the cause of foaming problems in kraft pulp mills and provide a good basis to understand how to solve these challenges in a more cost-effective way. This paper is the first in a series of three discussing effective selection of foam control agents. The results, which can be used to enhance foaming control at kraft pulp mills, will be discussed in one of the upcoming papers. Held in conjunction with the 14th ISWFPC (International Symposium on Wood, Fiber & Pulping Chemistry) and sponsored by the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry of Southern Africa (TAPPSA), the 12th APPW will be held June 25-28, 2007, at the International Convention Center in Durban, South Africa.
