NREL Honored for 20 Years of DOE Science Bowl Support
As part of its 20-year celebration, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) presented the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) with two awards for the lab's 20-year sponsorship and support of the National Science Bowl. The awards were given out by Energy Secretary Stephen Chu at the finals for the Science Bowl Competition in Washington D.C.
The National Science Bowl is celebrating 20 years of competition as the only academic event of its kind that is sponsored by a U.S. government agency. DOE began the Science Bowl tradition as a way to encourage high school students to explore math and science. For all 20 years, NREL has been a major sponsor of the Colorado Science Bowl and staff from NREL annually support the national science bowl by organizing the middle school competitions. NREL is one of only four national labs that has participated in all 20 years of the Science Bowl.
NREL Education Programs Coordinator Linda Lung was also honored for 20 years of contributions to the Science Bowl. Since the first year, she has organized an aspect of the middle school competition, and has run the middle school hydrogen and solar car races for the last eight years. Lung was in Washington D.C. for this year's competition and accepted the awards on NREL's behalf.
"The Science Bowl is an exciting way to engage students in science and math," said Lung. "Year after year, I can't wait to see how many of our Science Bowl alums go on to make amazing discoveries in the sciences, and I'm deeply honored to accept these awards on NREL's behalf."
This year, 105 high school and middle school championship teams from 42 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands competed in the 20th annual National Science Bowl. The students were quizzed on all science disciplines, including biology, chemistry, earth science, physics and astronomy, as well as math. Approximately 15,000 high school students from across the country compete for a chance to go to Washington D.C. for the national finals.
