Crown Equipment Offers a Technology-Based Approach to Safety at 2012 Safety and Health Conference

NEW BREMEN, Ohio - Crown Equipment Corporation, one of the world's largest material handling companies, today announced Jim Gaskell, director of global Insite(TM) products, will speak at the Association for Iron and Steel Technology's Safety and Health Conference on August 29.

Gaskell's presentation, "Improving Operator OSHA Compliance and Safety with the Use of Technology," will discuss how forklifts equipped with advanced technology, such as Crown's Insite Productivity Suite, are able to improve operator safety by detecting collisions and impacts, monitoring and controlling operator performance levels and ensuring equipment service intervals.

"Historically, companies have tried to manually manage regulatory compliance," Gaskell said. "Paper checklists are limited in their ability to alert managers of potential maintenance issues that need attention, or to stop an unauthorized employee from operating a forklift. New technologies allow warehouse and facility managers to receive immediate notifications about their fleets and operators, which can improve safety enforcement and control costs by reducing damage and downtime."

Gaskell will also discuss how two Crown customers, MBM Corporation and Owens & Minor, have gained safety benefits from the implementation of technology-based fleet and operator management systems.

"A lack of knowledge and understanding about integrated programs - and the increased efficiencies they offer for the entire warehouse - are major obstacles many companies face as they shift toward technology-based warehouse management systems," said Gaskell. "Integrating fleet and operator management technology into an existing or new facility helps managers be confident that their people and equipment are operating at the highest levels of efficiency, productivity and safety."

Sponsored by AIST's Safety & Health and Material Handling Technology Committees, the conference focuses on reinforcing safety and health initiatives at metal-producing facilities, as well as those of associated suppliers, vendors and contractors.
