Clean Harbors Receives NPRA Contractor Safety Award

Staff achieves 19 years of accident-free production support

NORWELL, MA - June 15, 2010 - Clean Harbors, the leading provider of environmental, energy and industrial services throughout North America, recently received a Contractor Award for Meritorious Safety Performance from the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association (NPRA).

The Award was presented to Clean Harbors for 2009 accident-free production support by the onsite staff at the Valero Refinery in Benicia, California.

Clean Harbors provides its Apollo Onsite Services to Valero, which includes hazardous and non-hazardous waste management and remediation services, in-plant transport and equipment cleaning.

"Clean Harbors has worked injury free for 19 years in the Benicia Refinery," said Rick Morgan, Safety Manager, Valero Benicia Refinery. "They have been working on becoming a member of Cal/OSHA's elite VPP [Voluntary Protection Program] Star Site program and are close to submitting their application. Working with a company such as Clean Harbors that places such a high value on safety is refreshing."

Contractor Award for Meritorious Safety Performance qualifications are based on employee incident rate reporting in accordance with OSHA recordkeeping requirements, as defined by law and entered on the OSHA 300A form. The company qualified by maintaining a Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) below 1.0 for the 2009 calendar year. Clean Harbors' TRIR has been 0.0 at Benicia for the past 19 years.

"This is an outstanding accomplishment by the Clean Harbors Benicia team," commented Andy Hastings, Clean Harbors Refinery Services Project Manager. "For a staff of nearly two dozen individuals to go 19 years without an OSHA-recordable incident is truly impressive. We're proud that they are part of the company and that they have received this recognition from the NPRA."
