Clean Harbors Lone Mountain Facility Receives EPA Recertification

First Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facility in U.S. to Receive VPP Star Recertification

WAYNOKA, Okla. - April 2, 2009 - Clean Harbors Environmental Services, Inc. ("Clean Harbors"), the leading provider of environmental and hazardous waste management services throughout North America, recently received the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) recertification at the Star level for its Lone Mountain Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facility (TSDF) here.

Lone Mountain was the first commercial TSDF to receive VPP Star status and once again leads the industry, becoming the first to receive recertification. In a letter to Clean Harbors' Facility General Manager Alan J. Adair, U.S. Department of Labor Deputy Assistant Secretary Donald G. Shalhoub wrote, "Your ongoing efforts to improve your safety and health management system and your longstanding commitment to VPP are an inspiration to us all. As a valued VPP participant and OSHA partner, you serve as a model of excellence in our national effort to strengthen worker safety and health."

VPP is a comprehensive health and safety process that requires employee involvement, management support, and cooperation with OSHA. Recipients demonstrate a strong management and employee safety culture that ensures a safe and healthful workplace environment, with occupational injury and illness incidence rates below the state and national averages for companies within the same industry classification.

"Three years ago the Lone Mountain team accomplished an industry milestone by becoming the first commercial TSDF to receive Star certification under OSHA's prestigious Voluntary Protection Program," commented Senior Vice President, Regulatory Affairs Philip G. Retallick. "With recertification, they continue their leadership for both the company and the industry. Lone Mountain has become a torchbearer for the company and the team has nurtured our efforts at several other sites."

Since Lone Mountain's initial certification, Clean Harbors has added four facilities to the federal VPP Star roster with an additional 10 sites moving through the certification program. The company is now working towards becoming a VPP Corporate-certified company.
