Clean Harbors Debuts Safety Information Campaign for the Chemical Industry

NORWELL, MA - April 13, 2011 - Clean Harbors, North America's leading provider of environmental, energy and industrial services, is offering information to help managers in the chemical industry and specialty chemical industry develop safety procedures to manage contractors during maintenance and turnaround projects.

The white paper, entitled, "Don't be the subject of a Chemical Safety Board investigation" is a comprehensive overview of contractor safety in the chemical industry. It presents a detailed pre-qualification check list for contractor evaluation and links to Chemical Safety Board Investigation results and analyses. The paper also discusses facility maintenance and turnaround project safety management, including daily safety tailgate sessions, daily permitting and behavior-based safety - all part of Clean Harbors' SafetyFirst! employee health and safety management (EH&S) program.

The campaign grew out of Clean Harbors' experience as both a host company that hires contractors for work on its incinerators and at other facilities, and as a contactor that supports many companies in the chemical and petrochemical industries in their day-to-day operations and turnaround projects.

Clean Harbors as a corporation maintains safety at the highest levels. Its SafetyFirst! Program, which includes training, operating procedures and reporting, instills a safety culture across the organization and is the model for the contractor safety program recommended in the white paper. SafetyFirst! has been instrumental in increasing safety awareness and promoting a safety culture. It applies to every Clean Harbors service offering from oilfield services to transportation and hazardous waste recycling and disposal.

"Safety has transformed Clean Harbors," commented Phillip G. Retallick, Senior Vice President for Regulatory Affairs at Clean Harbors and white paper author. "The safety culture is pervasive whether we are working at a Clean Harbors site or on a customer jobsite. Our commitment to safety is deep rooted and is a major contributor to the company's business and financial success. This paper shares our SafetyFirst! philosophy and approach, and we hope it will provide insights that will benefit others."

Clean Harbors' chemical and specialty chemical industry offerings include catalyst handling, chemical cleaning, high pressure services, pipeline services, tray tower, column & reactor services, and turnaround services.
