Cavium Delivers Optimized OpenWRT on OCTEON® III to Accelerate Retail/SMB Router Time to Market

Bringing Enterprise-level Performance, Functionality and Integrated Security to Retail/SMB Routers

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Cavium, Inc., (NASDAQ: CAVM), a leading provider of semiconductor products that enable intelligent processing for enterprise, data center, wired and wireless networking today announced that it has enabled the open source OpenWRT Linux distribution for embedded devices to run on the Cavium OCTEON III CN70/71XX 1 to 4 core processors. Cavium will demonstrate OpenWRT on the OCTEON III router/gateway reference design at Interop, Las Vegas, 2015 on booth 2027.

The feature-rich OpenWRT software package is performance-optimized for the Cavium CN71XX router/gateway reference board and will be included free of charge in the Router Reference Design Kit (RDK). This will enable ODMs/OEMs to significantly shorten hardware and software design cycles while delivering best-in-class home/SMB wireless routers and security appliance products. Optimized to leverage Cavium OCTEON III acceleration engines, the OpenWRT for OCTEON offers more CPU headroom for customized services, thereby reducing system costs. Compared to software-only solutions, the Cavium hardware acceleration enables line rate performance using far less CPU resource, 3 times better OpenVPN performance and 18 times better OpenSSL performance.

The OpenWRT for OCTEON includes the following features:

--  Optimized networking stack leveraging Cavium networking acceleration

        engine

--  OpenVPN and OpenSSL packages accelerated by Cavium security acceleration

        engines

--  Optional SNORT Suricata IPS Security packages

    --  Integrated 802.11a/b/g/n 802.11ac Wi-Fi drivers

--  Support of 4G LTE USB modems

--  Easy and flexible configurations through web GUI interface

--  Support for Barrier Breaker and Chaos Calmer OpenWRT releases

"We are excited to bring together the powerful network processing capabilities of our quad core OCTEON SoCs, and the flexibility of the feature rich open source OpenWRT software. Our optimized implementation of OpenWRT, leveraging OCTEON's unique hardware accelerators for packet processing, QOS, DPI and security, turbocharges the performance. This enables our customers to rapidly deliver formidable enterprise class secure router to the SMB market," said Venkat Sundaresan, Director, Cavium Infrastructure Processor Group.

Several OEMs/ODMs are developing their latest products using the optimized OpenWRT software package, taking full advantage of the OCTEON III hardware accelerations.

"ITUS Networks has been working with Cavium to maximize the performance of our new Shield product line using OpenWRT and the Cavium OCTEON III processor, to provide Enterprise-class antivirus, intrusion prevention and content filtering for home and small business networks," said Daniel Ayoub, Founder and CEO of ITUS Networks.

The OCTEON III CN70XX/CN71XX families of Multi-Core cnMIPS64 Processors target high-end retail, SMB and entry-level enterprise platforms for networking, security, storage and control plane applications. The families integrate single to quad cnMIPS64 v3 cores with virtualization capabilities and hypervisor support. The highly-integrated SoCs also include a rich set of I/O's and Cavium's advanced hardware acceleration for deep packet inspection (DPI). The CN70XX/CN71XX families deliver the most optimized solution for power, performance, and price in next-generation applications.

The OpenWRT software for OCTEON III is open source and will be provided free of charge to Cavium's customers.
