Carton with Henkel MiraFoil® Coating Achieves 2010 Greener Package Award

Bridgewater, NJ -- Packaging World magazine has awarded the 2010 Greener Package Award to GlaxoSmithKline's Aquafresh White & Shine toothpaste carton, which combines Henkel's MiraFoil metallic coating with Holobrite(TM) filmless holographic technology by The Specialized Packaging Group (SPG).

"We wanted to find a more sustainable, lower-cost option to traditional holographic packaging," said Michael Larocca, Packaging Development Manager at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). Larocca and his colleagues determined that a combination of MiraFoil and HoloBrite technologies was an ideal replacement for traditional holographic lamination. "MiraFoil is on the silver areas for a vibrant metallic effect, and HoloBrite technology creates the holographic pattern, eliminating film lamination. This is the first package in its category to combine both MiraFoil and HoloBrite, replacing a traditional holographic lamination with inks and coatings to achieve a comparable look."

Although the carton is designed to attract attention, the real differences are those that the consumer can't see. "The most notable is the impact on the environment," said Larocca. "The package eliminates the challenges of recycling paperboard cartons that contain polyester laminations. It has also resulted in a simplified supply chain. The combination of technologies that SPG has, in-line on their hybrid press, supports shorter lead times and cost effectiveness. And, because there aren't multiple steps and outside companies involved, it's all produced under one roof, resulting in faster response times to produce and make changes when needed."

The eight winners are featured in the September issue of Packaging World and will be displayed at the Showcase of Packaging Innovations® at PACK EXPO International 2010.
