Can Your Data Logger Do THIS?

CAS DataLoggers and dataTaker Form the QC Solution

CHESTERLAND OH — CAS DataLoggers welcomes you to our new series showing unique and challenging applications our customers have tackled using their dataTaker data loggers. An interesting project that one of our customers recently undertook involved quality control testing for batteries coming down an assembly line where they had to be tested for voltage. The company produces 2 different types of 6-volt batteries which are connected in series but have slightly different voltages. One of these battery types needs to be manually tested, while the other can be automatically tested using the company’s own text fixture. Management called us up to put together a time-saving setup which would let workers just scan the products with a handheld scanner to quickly determine which test method to use.

CAS DataLoggers supplied the manufacturer with a dataTaker DT80 Intelligent Data Logger. These intelligent devices can simultaneously capture a scanned bar code along with 1 or more other values to determine whether a product is high-quality or defective. To streamline their QC process, users connected a handheld barcode scanner to their DT80's serial port using the scanner’s serial adapter. They then configured the scanner so that whenever it scans a code, it sends a carriage return line feed to the data logger, which instantly takes a reading. Using the included dEX graphical interface software, users setup the dataTaker so that when it receives this feed, it automatically triggers a datalogging schedule and records the barcode along with the battery's voltage. By reading the barcode and any other values simultaneously in just one scan, the dataTaker saves workers the significant time spent deciding which testing method to use for each battery.

The customer has connected their DT80 to a switch marked with voltage measurement limits A and B for their 2 different products. While scanning each battery, the dataTaker's digital output automatically decides which set of limits to choose for which measuring method, indicating either manually or automatically. After each scan, the data logger then compares each reading to the manufacturer-set limits used to indicate passed or failed products. Whenever it detects a voltage value lying outside these limits, the dataTaker automatically generates alarm emails to designated users. Additionally, for increased quality assurance and failure detection, the dataTaker's digital outputs can be connected to an alarm light, siren, or other external contact warning device.

At the end of every production run, users retrieve all the data from the dataTaker's USB stick and read the file on an office PC. This shows them a list of every failed product by the barcodes and gives a highly detailed look at their testing process.

This capability really highlights the dataTaker's flexibility and intelligent operation--no other product can do this without help from a PC or without requiring users to write 15 lines of code. At CAS DataLoggers, we offer our dataTaker data loggers along with FREE tech support as an ideal solution for your real-time data acquisition, remote monitoring and control needs. These devices connect to a wide range of most sensors to measure almost any signal including temperature, humidity, voltage/current, 4-20 mA loops, resistance, and many others. Featuring a built-in web server and extensive communications capabilities including Ethernet, USB, Serial and cellular models, dataTaker dataloggers are ready to be rolled out in just about any industrial application, no matter how demanding.
