Broadcom's Multimedia Processor and Power Management Technology Selected by SanDisk for New V-Mate(TM) Video Recorder

Broadcom® Mobile Processing Technology Enables Multi-Format Recording of Digital Multimedia Content for Playback on Mobile Devices

IRVINE, Calif., Nov. 9 / - Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ:BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced that SanDisk® Corporation has selected Broadcom® mobile multimedia and power management technologies to enable its new SanDisk V-Mate(TM) Video Memory Card Recorder. The V-Mate media recorder (available now) is an innovative device that introduces a new level of flexibility for storing and re-playing digital video. It utilizes Broadcom mobile multimedia processing technology to encode and store video from a wide range of sources onto a SanDisk memory card for high-quality playback on mobile devices such as mobile handsets, portable media players, or even standard television sets.

"Consumers of digital entertainment prefer technology that provides them the flexibility to enjoy quality video on their own terms -- watching what they want, when they want, and where they want," said Wes Brewer, Vice President of Consumer Product Marketing at SanDisk. "Pairing SanDisk memory and storage technology with Broadcom multimedia processing in the new V-Mate media recorder has enabled unprecedented power and choice for consumers and a unique new way to experience video on the go."

The V-Mate is more than simply a media recorder, serving as a unique bridge between various analog sources for video content (such as from DVD players, broadcast, cable and digital satellite television, and the VCR, among others) and the consumer's desire to view that content in a mobile context. Powered by both the Broadcom VideoCore® BCM2724 mobile multimedia processor and BCM59001 Power Management Unit (PMU), the SanDisk V-Mate media recorder allows users to record onto a flash storage card up to 3.5 hours of high quality video per gigabyte, using a range of industry-standard video formats to optimize user experience across a range of mobile devices. With a maximum recording resolution of VGA 640 x 480 pixels, the V-Mate generates media files optimized for playback on popular mobile devices such as the Palm Treo, Sony PSP, and other flash card-enabled mobile devices, including notebook PCs.

"Renowned for its innovative products, SanDisk is a leading brand for expansion storage used in mobile phones and other portable devices," said Robert Swann, Senior Director of Marketing of Broadcom's Mobile Multimedia line of business. "Broadcom is excited about the new V-Mate device, which utilizes Broadcom technology to enable the distribution of video content by flash storage cards into the mobile space."

In addition to the VideoCore processor, the V-Mate also integrates the newly announced BCM59001 power management unit (PMU) solution. The new PMU offers intelligent monitoring and regulation of complex power systems for mobile and other power-conscious devices, providing the smallest footprint and highest level of functionality available in the industry today. Makers of mobile devices can now rely upon Broadcom as a consolidated source for another vital component to enable next-generation mobile devices. The BCM59001 PMU was announced in a separate press release earlier this week.

VideoCore Mobile Multimedia Processor Capabilities

Like other products in the Broadcom VideoCore family, the BCM2724 processor boasts an impressive array of multimedia features including MPEG-4 VGA or H.264 CIF video encoding/decoding at 30 frames per second, and TV output and support for 5 Megapixel cameras. The BCM2724 processor also provides high-quality video, gaming and music capabilities to mid-range portable devices and mobile phones by integrating 64Mbits of embedded SDRAM with the VideoCore processor in a single package. The chip is based on Broadcom's VideoCore video-processing engine, enabling all chips in the BCM27xx family to be software compatible, completely programmable, and utilizes the same range of audio and video formats.

Availability

Both Broadcom's VideoCore® BCM2724 mobile multimedia processor and BCM59001 Power Management Unit (PMU) are in production today, and available in volume quantities.
