Several years ago Seabrook Plastics was approached by Acclaim Innovations, a company that markets and sells a consumer product line called Firefly Eyewear – an ingenious product that combines illumination and magnification into one hands-free unit for the sporting goods market.
Acclaim Innovations originally tooled and launched this product overseas in an attempt to keep costs down. During the first year of production, they experienced significant quality and lead time issues that threatened the products viability. Acclaim then began the arduous task of locating a reliable U.S. based manufacturer was referred to Seabrook by one of their contacts in the plastics industry.
“Acclaim first contacted us to see if we would be interested in their project. We of course said yes and they came out for a plant tour and face to face meeting. They were very impressed with Seabrook and we decided to take this to the next step and do a quote for them. The quoting and discussions were favorable so they decided to move forward with us,” said Al Claeys of Seabrook Plastics.
Al reports, “The project progressed in 2 phases. First we took over the assembly and distribution. The second phase was to have the overseas supplier build a bank of parts and then ship us the tooling. Tooling was reviewed once it arrived - and modifications and upgrades were quoted. We had several meetings with Acclaim to discuss the tooling issues. We needed to improve the tools so they could repeatedly run good quality parts at a consistent cycle. We were happy to guide them through the possible solutions to the tooling issues we were all presented with. We formulated a plan together and proceeded to modify and improve the tools. The Seabrook team managed and oversaw the entire launch process (since the Acclaim personnel had very little background in the molding field). The tooling upgrades were finally completed and debugged.“
Since we have localized this product, there have been ZERO customer complaints! Once the program was transferred and had been running for a while, Acclaim went back and reran their numbers. They were happy to report that they would not have to increase the price of their product! This was due to the improved quality (no quality returns) and increased productivity and smaller finished goods inventory.
