WASHINGTON –The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) today announced changes designed to strengthen and improve the BIO International Convention as it prepares to return to San Diego in June 2014.

“We have conducted extensive opinion research and found that our members, attendees, exhibitors, and sponsors have new Convention wants and needs. With Scott’s help, we will be able to implement exciting changes within the Convention that will better deliver the experience they seek.”

“The BIO International Convention is the biotechnology community’s largest and most important annual event. To ensure its continuing status as the biotech event well into the future, I have made changes designed to enhance our Convention’s strategic value to our members, attendees, state and federal government officials, and international partners,” said Jim Greenwood, BIO’s President and CEO.

Effective immediately, BIO’s Chief Operating Officer, Scott Whitaker, will assume new duties as President of the BIO International Convention, with a focus on making the Convention as dynamic and valuable as the community it supports. “As the world’s premier biotech event, the BIO International Convention must evolve along with the growing and changing needs of this dynamic community of scientists and entrepreneurs. The Convention plays a key role in helping our industry grow and succeed in its mission of healing, fueling and feeding the world. As we begin preparations for our return to San Diego in June of next year, we will ensure that the Convention remains fresh and focused in support of this important mission,” said Whitaker.

Whitaker’s new title will be Chief Operating Officer, BIO, & President, BIO International Convention.

Robbi Lycett, BIO’s Senior Vice President of Conventions & Conferences, who will continue to manage the successful production of the Convention added, “We have conducted extensive opinion research and found that our members, attendees, exhibitors, and sponsors have new Convention wants and needs. With Scott’s help, we will be able to implement exciting changes within the Convention that will better deliver the experience they seek.”

Rachel King, Chair of BIO, said, “Bringing together the unique skills of both Scott and Robbi will enhance the BIO International Convention experience for all attendees, exhibitors and sponsors. This strategic partnership will add value to our industry’s most important annual event and ensure that the BIO International Convention remains strong for years into the future.”
