Gregory Crawford, Dean at Notre Dame, Selected as BIO 2015 Everyday Superhero Finalist
Recognized for efforts towards curing rare disease that predominately affects children
WASHINGTON--The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) is pleased to announce the finalists of its Everyday Superheroes program, a contest that recognizes biotech superheroes in the patient, industry and academic communities. After more than 100 nominations, Gregory Crawford, dean of the College of Science at the University of Notre Dame, was selected as one of only five finalists in the University/Research category.
“Our goal with the Everyday Superhero contest is to acknowledge the tireless contributions of Gregory and other unsung heroes in an effort to give back just a portion of what they’ve given to the biotech community.”
“Gregory was recognized for his efforts in raising awareness and more than $1M in research and clinical trial funds, including that of a promising FDA treatment, for Niemann-Pick Type C disease ,” said Scott Whitaker, President of the BIO International Convention. “Our goal with the Everyday Superhero contest is to acknowledge the tireless contributions of Gregory and other unsung heroes in an effort to give back just a portion of what they’ve given to the biotech community.”
Niemann-Pick Type C (NPC) is a cholesterol-storage disorder that primarily affects children before or during adolescence. The disease causes cholesterol to accumulate in the body’s cells and eventually leads to neurodegenerative problems that are always fatal. Legendary Notre Dame football coach Ara Parseghian lost three of his grandchildren to the rare disease.
“As a child, I dreamed of playing football for Coach Parseghian,” said Crawford. “Learning of his family’s story and about the devastating effect of NPC spurred me to raise awareness for NPC, and I thank BIO and the community for this honor and drawing more attention to this rare, devastating disease.”
On May 26, Gregory will embark on his fifth “Road to Discovery” bicycle ride departing from Long Island, New York. After one month and an estimated 3,500 miles, he will arrive in Pebble Beach, California. This ride will add to the 11,224 miles logged, 120+ cites visited, 60+ Notre Dame alumni club events and countless fundraisers with numerous athletic teams all in an effort to educate people about NPC.
The BIO Superhero winners will be announced on June 1, 2015 and recognized throughout the entire 2015 BIO International Convention, taking place June 15-18 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. For full details about the contest, please visit: convention.bio.org/superhero.

Gregory P. Crawford joined the University of Notre Dame in 2008 as the William K. Warren Foundation Dean of the College of Science and professor of physics. As the dean, he inspires and directs more than 500 faculty, staff, and postdoctoral researchers in the college, which has 1,500 undergraduate students and over 450 graduate students.
