Judges Select the Best Transportation Projects in the Western Region
Oklahoma City - Projects that reduced congestion, shortened project delivery times, improved access to rural communities, and made commuting safer were recognized today as winners of America's Transportation Awards at the annual meeting of the Western Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.
"Our states are doing great work in challenging times," said Susan Martinovich, AASHTO president and director of the Nevada Department of Transportation. "We are accountable and we are delivering projects on time and under budget. This competition recognizes innovation and ingenuity. We are making a difference."
AASHTO, AAA, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce co-sponsor the annual awards competition to recognize the best of America's transportation projects in three main categories - On Time, Under Budget, and Innovative Management.
Twelve transportation projects from 10 Western state DOTs were entered into this year's competition. Five states received regional awards.
Three states earned awards in the On Time category: The Nevada Department of Transportation for its Spring Creek Roundabout Project (small project division); the Montana Department of Transportation for its Shiloh Road Project (medium project division); and the Texas Department of Transportation State Highway 161 Western Extension Project (large project division).
Two states also earned awards in the Innovative Management category: The Washington State Department of Transportation Operation I-5 Partnership to Relieve Congestion Project (small project division); and the Utah Department of Transportation State Route 171/3500 South Reconstruction Project (medium project division).
Winners in the remaining regional competitions will also compete for the national Grand Prize and People's Choice Award, which will be presented at the AASHTO Annual Meeting Oct. 16 in Detroit. The Grand Prize is awarded to the state DOT project receiving the greatest number of points in judging by a panel of experts. The separate People's Choice Award is presented to the transportation project that receives the greatest number of online votes from the general public. Online voting will begin Aug. 31.
