Bayer MaterialScience's Baytec SPR Elastomeric Thick Film Coatings Provide Tough, Long-Lasting Waterproofing Protection in Demanding Industrial Applications

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 23, 2007 - Baytec SPR thick film coatings from Bayer MaterialScience are available in formulations designed specifically for challenging industrial waterproofing applications such as protecting water and wastewater containment structures; concrete and metal bridge decks, and road and wall surfaces. Baytec SPR thick film coatings also are ideal for protecting industrial roofing systems, stairways, terraces and parking structures.

"For more than 30 years, Bayer's Baytec SPR spray systems have stood the test of time in a variety of sealing and corrosion protection applications," said Steven Reinstadtler, market channel manager, Spray Elastomers Group for Bayer MaterialScience. "By applying this expertise and chemistry to infrastructure and industrial applications, Bayer is not only responding to a market need for long-lasting protection in these demanding environments, but also demonstrating a continued commitment to thick film coating technologies."

Bayer will highlight its Baytec SPR thick film coating systems at its booth (S11655) at World of Concrete 2007, held Jan. 23-26, 2007, in Las Vegas.

Baytec SPR two-component, 100 percent-solids spray polyurethane systems offer an outstanding combination of physical and chemical properties for industrial applications. These properties include:

o Resistance to wear and abrasion;

o Excellent tensile strength;

o High elasticity and elongation;

o A homogeneous seal on cracked, porous and cellular substrates;

o Resistance to hydrolysis, ozone and UV radiation;

o Good permeability to water vapor;

o Corrosion resistance for metal substrates;

o Good weatherability and resistance to microbes;

o Good chemical resistance.

When reacted to form a membrane, Baytec SPR systems contain both polyurethane and polyurea linkages. According to Reinstadtler, this allows the system to harness the excellent durability of a polyurea along with the flexibility and processability of a polyurethane. "Because of this desirable hybrid combination of properties, we believe that Baytec SPR spray systems offer the best of both worlds," said Reinstadtler.

Furthermore, Baytec SPR spray systems, which can be pigmented to any color, are approved for use in industrial waterproofing applications by a variety of federal, state and local authorities as well as civil engineering and consulting firms in the United States and worldwide.
