Automatic ID Industry Honors Excellence at 2011 AIM Expo
Four Individuals Recognized for Outstanding Contributions
Las Vegas, NV -- AIM, the association for Automatic Identification and Mobility, recognized four individuals during the AIM Expo, held in Las Vegas, Nevada, for their noteworthy contributions to the development and growth of the automatic identification and mobile IT community. The Richard R. Dilling, Don Percival, Ted Williams, and Excellence in Journalism Awards, the industry's most prestigious awards, are presented annually to individuals or organizations with outstanding vision, initiative or service to the industry.
Richard R. Dilling Award
AIM awarded its highest honor, the Richard R. Dilling Award, to Ed Barkan, Motorola Solutions in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the AIDC industry during his 30+ year career. Barkan has been a major contributor to many designs, from the world's first handheld laser scanner (the LS1000) to OEM scan modules that allow designers to incorporate scanning into their own products. He holds more than 235 granted U.S. patents and many foreign equivalents. Products utilizing his patents or direct design input equate for billions of dollars of revenue over the span of his career. Barkan's understanding and creativity in the circuits and mechanics of barcode scanning, as well as the needs and applications of the customer in the Auto-ID market have helped shape the industry.
Don Percival Award
AIM Inc. and SCAN: The Data Capture Report recognized Paula Giovannetti of Best Buy Company Inc. with the Don Percival Award, a distinction presented annually to an individual or organization from the user community who has made outstanding contributions to the application of automatic identification and mobility technologies. Ms. Giovannetti has been at the forefront of electronic commerce and automatic identification and data capture in the retail and wholesaler distribution supply chain for over 20 years as a champion within her own company, as a member of numerous standards organizations and as a tireless educator both within and outside her company.
Most recently, she was instrumental in deploying an innovative in-store application that employed QR Code symbols that bring web-based information to the in-store experience to provide enhanced customer service.
Ted Williams Award
Dr. Marlin Mickle, the Nickolas A. DeCecco Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh, accepted the Ted Williams Award. Named in honor of Ted Williams, an industry innovator, collaborator, and long time member of the AIM Technical Symbology Committee, the Ted Williams Award is given to a member of the industry that has made outstanding contributions to the development of the Automatic Identification and Mobility industry. Dr. Mickle has been involved in RFID for many years and is currently the head of the RFID Center of Excellence at the University of Pittsburgh. He is actively involved in many aspects of RFID and is also the lead person for ground-breaking research into testing RFID, active RFID systems, medical use of RFID, and others.
His research, development and educational activities have been supported by over 115 grants and/or contracts from the U.S. Federal government and private industry. He holds patents on a magnetically levitated gyro, a gyro optical sensor, energy harvesting and antennas on a CMOS chip.
Excellence in Journalism Award
In recognition of his insights and analysis for the automatic identification industry, Michael Liard, Research Director for RFID and Barcode Scanning in the Security and ID group for ABI Research, received the 2011 Excellence in Journalism Award. This award was established by the AIM Education and Public Policy committee to recognize a journalist or media representative covering the automatic identification
industry. Mr. Liard has covered AutoID industries since 2000. Prior to ABI, Michael worked with VDC Research. He has authored more than 50 reports on RFID, bar code and AIDC-related topics, is a regular commentator for the industry press, has appeared on national TV programs and has been a speaker at dozens of conferences.
