ATK Conducts Successful Precision Guidance Kit Divert Flight Test

MINNEAPOLIS, Jan. 10 // -- Alliant Techsystems (NYSE:ATK) recently conducted a successful divert flight test of its low-cost Precision Guidance Kit (PGK). The PGK round was fired from a 155mm Howitzer at the Yuma Proving Grounds, Yuma, Arizona. The round maintained aerodynamic stability throughout its flight and demonstrated an in-flight divert capability well in excess of the company's design requirements for Increment 1, which is a 50 meter CEP.
"This was a critical flight test in support of the U.S. Army's PGK program and we are very pleased that ATK's design not only met but exceeded our test objectives," said Dave Wise, Vice President and General Manager, Advanced Weapons. "ATK's successful flight test is the result of a great design concept, coupled with the expertise and hard work of our PGK industry team."
The divert flight test is the first in a series of tests designed to demonstrate how ATK's PGK solution can maneuver to, and defeat its intended target. ATK's design features a fixed canard guidance package with gun- hardened electronics, a self-generated power supply, and a minimum number of moving parts. It is designed to not only meet, but exceed requirements for range, accuracy, and cost.
In July of this year, ATK was awarded one of two technology demonstration contracts to rapidly design and fly a PGK projectile. The company expects to enter into a fly-off this spring that will determine the final down-select for a System Development and Demonstration contract. ATK's industry team includes Rockwell Collins (NYSE:COL) and Draper Labs.
