ASTM International Symposium on Static and Dynamic Spinal Implants
W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., Sept. 28, 2009-Papers are invited for a symposium on "Static and Dynamic Spinal Implants: Are We Evaluating Them Appropriately?" Sponsored by ASTM International Committee F04 on Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices, the symposium will be held Nov. 16, 2010, at the Grand Hyatt San Antonio, San Antonio, Texas, in conjunction with the Nov. 16-19 standards development meetings of the committee.
The objectives of the symposium are to provide a forum to evaluate existing standard test methods for spinal implants in light of clinical experience and failure modes, and to discuss what new directions and standards are needed to address clinical failures through pre-clinical testing.
There are four sessions planned for the symposium: static devices; dynamic devices, in vitro (cadaveric) test methods, and suggested test methods. Participants will learn: how current standards are succeeding in predicting clinical failure modes; where current standards are not predicting clinical failure modes and how they should be changed; and what new test methods are needed.
To participate in the symposium, presenters/authors must submit the online abstract submittal form at www.astm.org/f04symp1110.htm and attach a 250-300 word preliminary abstract by Jan. 8, 2010. The abstract must include a clear definition of the objective and approach of the work discussed, pointing out material that is new, and present sufficient details regarding results. The presentation and manuscript must not be of a commercial nature nor can it have been previously published. The symposium chair will notify you by March 5, 2010, of your paper's acceptability for presentation.
Symposium presenters are required to submit their papers to the Journal of ASTM International (JAI). JAI is an online, peer-reviewed journal for the international scientific and engineering community (www.astm.org/JAI). Manuscripts to be peer reviewed for JAI are due online by Nov. 16, 2010. Once the final selection of abstracts is approved, ASTM will send authors' instructions via e-mail. The author will receive a copy of his/her paper in a PDF.
