First Polyester Composition Tile Standard Developed by ASTM Resilient Floor Covering Committee
Press release date: January 11, 2013
“ASTM F2982 sets forth an explicit set of compositional and performance requirements for polyester-based flooring tile,” says Tom Erisman, chairman of F06.80 and a senior research scientist at Armstrong World Industries, a manufacturer of a polyester composition floor tile. “Flooring tiles covered by the specification will be manufactured to consistently meet customer’s needs and the stringent demands of commercial environments.”
ASTM F2982 covers polyester composition floor tile for use in commercial, light commercial or residential flooring applications. Tile covered by the specification may be either smooth or embossed.
Among the requirements detailed in ASTM F2982 are materials and manufacture information, mechanical properties and dimensions/permissible variations. The Performance Requirements section of the standard covers:
• Dimensional stability;
• Resistance to chemicals, heat and light stability; and
• Static load limit.
“Development of the polyester binder followed important principles of green chemistry, life cycle assessment and design for the environment,” says Erisman. “The product provides a PVC- and phthalate-free flooring option for building spaces in education, healthcare, retail, office and other commercial/institutional segments."
All interested parties are welcome to participate in the standards developing activities of the subcommittee. With the completion of ASTM F2982, F06.80 has begun developing the following proposed specifications:
• ASTM WK10811, Specification for Cork Tile Flooring;
• ASTM WK35736, Specification for Bonded Rubber Crumb Floor Coverings; and
• ASTM WK36371, Specification for Polyolefin Composition Floor Tile.
