ASTM International President's Leadership Award Honors William C. Griese

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa.—William C. Griese, standards development and green initiative manager at the Tile Council of North America (TCNA) in Anderson, S.C., is a recipient of the 2013 President’s Leadership Award from ASTM International.

The President’s Leadership Award recognizes individuals early in their ASTM career who have significantly advanced the Society’s mission through extraordinary accomplishment, example and vision, and is presented to two ASTM members annually. This year’s other recipient is John S. McCartney, Ph.D., an assistant professor at the University of Colorado, Boulder, Colo.

A member of ASTM International since 2007, Griese is chairman of Committee C21 on Ceramic Whitewares and Related Products and its Subcommittee C21.06 on Ceramic Tile. In addition to his work with C21, Griese is a member of Committee E60 on Sustainability and is currently serving a term on the ASTM Committee on Technical Committee Operations (COTCO).

Griese joined the Tile Council of North America as a laboratory engineer in 2006 after earning a bachelor’s degree in ceramic and materials engineering from Clemson University, Clemson, S.C. In his current role, which he assumed in 2008, Griese manages the development and revision of ASTM, ANSI, ISO and other industry-specific standards, directs TCNA’s sustainability efforts, and works closely with TCNA’s Product Performance Testing Laboratory.

A LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP) with a specialty in Building Design and Construction, Griese is an active participant in the annual World Ceramic Tiles Forum and serves as a U.S. delegate for several global standardization initiatives. He is often featured as a columnist in various ceramic tile industry publications.

ASTM International President James A. Thomas will present Griese with his award at the Total Solutions Plus Conference in Bonita Springs, Fla., on Oct. 28. Total Solutions Plus is the annual industry-wide conference and networking event hosted by major tile industry associations, the Ceramic Tile Distributors Association, the National Tile Contractors Association and the Tile Council of North America.
