ASTM International Committee Honors Dr. Paul Tennis for Contributions to Portland Cement Standards


W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., March 5, 2010-Paul D. Tennis, Ph.D., manager of cement and concrete technology at the Portland Cement Association, Skokie, Ill., has received the Bryant Mather Award from ASTM International Committee C01 on Cement.

The Bryant Mather Award recognizes examples of outstanding merit that further the continuing development of standards for hydraulic cements. Tennis was specifically cited for his outstanding administrative and technical support in the advancement of ASTM C150, Specification for Portland Cement, in harmonization with the AASHTO portland cement standard, AASHTO M85.

Tennis joined ASTM International in 1996. He works on several subcommittees within Committees C01 and C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates, and he currently leads Subcommittee C01.10 on Hydraulic Cements for General Concrete Construction. He also served a term on the Committee on Standards, for which he received a Service Award of Appreciation.

Tennis has spent much of his career with the Portland Cement Association, where he has held various positions including materials research engineer, program coordinator and program manager. He assumed his current role in 2009. His career has focused on improving the performance and durability of concrete though research on concrete materials and deterioration mechanisms.

In addition to ASTM International, Tennis is a member of the American Concrete Institute. A graduate of Clemson University, Clemson, S.C., where he earned a B.S. in ceramic engineering, Tennis holds an M.S. in materials science and engineering, and a Ph.D. in civil and environmental engineering from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill.
